A Human Home Run

I can’t believe this stunt hasn’t been performed myriad times before but this is the first time I remember reading about it. ESPN the Magazine ran its annual Veeckies Awards recently and gave the “Best Projectile” award to the Lowell (Mass) Spinners. This single-A short season affiliate of the Red Sox ran a promotion called The Human Home Run where David “Cannonball” Smith Sr. was shot from just beyond second base over the outfield wall. Proving that adapting promotions is an important part of the business, in his acceptance speech Jon Goode, a spokesman for the Spinners said, “Other people are taking our idea and adapting it. Smith has already been contacted to do a human field goal for an arena football team.” Below is a video of Mr. Smith discussing his launch with the Spinners.
