NO PITY Portland Timbers Billboards

The Portland Timbers commenced its first season in the MLS on March 19th. In honor of the team’s move to the highest level of professional soccer in the US, the Timbers marketing office has done a tremendous job with the “We Are Timbers” fan billboard contest.

The contest, which has been ongoing since January, allowed fans to have their pictures taken with axes and chainsaws, doing their best “NO PITY” poses. The pictures were then narrowed down to 100 finalists. Four winners who will be chosen by fan voting on Facebook will have their pictures posted on a billboard right around the corner from JELD-WEN Field, located at 17th and Burnside.

This contest has very successfully integrated fan participation and social media. The fan participation has been phenomenal, both in terms of those who had their picture taken and those who have “liked” the Timbers and its photos on Facebook. So far this week more than two thousand people have joined the Timbers’ Facebook page, bringing the team’s total over 30,000 fans and putting it in the top 10 of MLS teams. For a franchise that is just beginning its turn on the main stage, that is quite impressive. Needless to say much of this social media success can be credited back to the We Are Timbers (NO PITY) billboard branding campaign.
