12,000+ for a Women's Game

The University of Oregon opened Matthew Knight Arena on January 13th to a sold out crowd for a men’s basketball game vs USC. This past weekend the Oregon Women played their first game in the 12,000+ seat arena. Amazingly that game, the Civil War vs the Oregon State Beavers, also sold out. This was in large part due to the fact that the UO decided to sell general admission tickets to the game for $2. This makes a tremendous amount of sense to me and frankly, I don’t know why more colleges don’t steeply discount tickets to get fans in the stands. The game on Sunday afternoon was a tremendous experience for the players and coaches of both teams, along with the fans in attendance. Additionally the University had significantly higher concession sales as a result of the packed house. Kudus to the UO Athletic department for taking steps to insure the opening women’s game at Matt Knight was a special experience for everyone involved.
