The 12th Man

Almost all sports fans are familiar with the celebrity guided signing of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at Wrigley Field during the 7th inning stretch. A less know but equally cool celebrity and fan tradition exists in Seattle with the raising of the “12th Man” flag. The crowd in Seattle is known as the 12th Man. At the beginning of each game a celebrity raises the 12th Man flag at the top of the South end of Century Link Field. The buzz circling the stadium prior to the reveal of the celebrity was palpable. On this particular night the hoister was none other than Bill Russell who was very warmly welcomed by the crowd. Any venue specific tradition that gets the crowd fired up is well worth its cost. In this case every dollar Seattle is spending on the 12th Man Flag Raisers is a bargain.
