March Madness and Vasectomies... The Perfect Pairing?
By: katypolansky | Category: Advertising
I’ve long thought that the opening Thursday and Friday of March Madness should be national holidays. As we all know that is currently not the case and national productivity suffers because of it. A group of enterprising doctors however has come up with a way to legitimately get the day off for some men. Urologists at a Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin clinic are advertising March Madness as the perfect time for a vasectomy because men can use their recovery time to rest up while watching college basketball games. The newspaper campaign is evidently targeted towards women, because not surprisingly men rarely schedule their own vasectomy appointments. The clinic is offering patients free pizza, a cooler filled with mugs, frozen peas and microwave popcorn as “parting” gifts.
This advertising campaign actually makes a lot of sense to me. In that vein I googled
“March Madness + vasectomy” to see if it had been done before. Turns out the first example I could find was from a group of doctors in Springfield, Oregon who urged men to “lower your seed for the tournament.” Here is an entertaining short article from the Seattle Times discussing the Oregon Urology campaign from 2008.
