Shamu Pretzels

Concessions are serious business. The amount of money a school, team, concert hall, movie theater or amusement park can make selling food is incredible. As a frequenter of these places I’m painfully aware of what I pay to get something fairly standard like a soda, sandwich or some popcorn. It kills me to think that I’m paying $4 for a 32 oz soda, when I know I can get two liters at be beloved Wal-Mart for $.99. That being said there are rare occasions when I buy something normal, with a small twist, that makes $4 seem reasonable.

I was at Sea World in San Diego this last week and bought a soft pretzel. However, this wasn’t just any soft pretzel, it was shaped like Shamu! That got me to thinking, for very limited costs, I’m certain a team could contract with its concessionaire to produce, for instance, ball shaped pretzels. At a baseball game, the pretzel could be round with two pretzels swoops that look like the red strings on the ball. Another option would making pretzels that look like the team’s mascot. If Sea World can get specially made pretzels, I’m certain teams and schools could as well. The fact that it took me three stops to find a cart that wasn’t sold out of Shamu pretzels suggests it might be a good investment.
